Date syrup is so versatile

Do you already know the sinfully sweet and delicious syrup made from our wonderful Sukkari dates? Date syrup is a perfect substitute for sugar and gives sweet and savory dishes a particularly caramelly note. And if you're not using it in the kitchen, then you can use it in the bathroom, because date syrup has great potential to become the new anti-aging agent.

But isn’t date syrup just like liquid sugar?

The huge difference to sugar is that date syrup contains no empty calories. That means it is packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Antioxidants can be thought of as the fire brigade in our body. They reduce inflammation and protect our cells from the aging process - both from the inside and the outside.

Date syrup is healthier than agave syrup, maple syrup & Co

Vegetable syrups such as agave syrup and the like are becoming increasingly popular and are also used as a vegan alternative to honey. In contrast to date syrup, however, the proportion of fructose (fruit sugar) in syrups is quite high. Too much fructose, especially in concentrated form, damages our liver and can lead to inflammation. Our liver can only use a limited amount of fructose per day. With date syrup, however, the ratio between glucose and fructose is balanced. With the same amount of date syrup, less fructose is consumed.

Date syrup gives almost any dish, whether sweet or salty, a unique and distinctive taste. Here are my 5 favorite uses for the syrup from the healthy palm fruit.

The versatile applications

1. Date syrup for radiant skin!

Date syrup is not only an all-rounder in the kitchen, but also popular in natural cosmetics. It helps to firm our skin and regenerate better. For example, you can use date syrup to create great face masks.

2. Simply as a spread

Date syrup is a healthy and delicious alternative to sugary and unhealthy spreads. You can easily create a variety of spreads yourself with date syrup. But even spread on bread alone, date syrup is enough to make a dessert in a top-rated restaurant. With a little cocoa powder, almond butter and a pinch of cinnamon, you can conjure up a healthy chocolate spread from the date syrup. Personally, I think it's much better than Nutella.

3. To sweeten drinks

As a big fan of matcha latte, chai tea, golden milk and homemade cocoa, I only use date syrup to sweeten it. The caramel and gently sweet taste harmonizes perfectly with the slightly bitter taste of matcha and cocoa. But even in herbal and fruit teas, just 1 teaspoon of date syrup is enough to sweeten the tea in a natural and healthy way.

4. For salad dressings

Salads are healthy and should be eaten every day. With different ingredients and a delicious dressing, salads are anything but one-sided. With a few chopped walnuts, pieces of dates, hemp seeds and a good marinade, every salad is a delight. You can also use date syrup to create super delicious, fruity and spicy dressings. My favorite is the date-orange dressing. I simply mix 2 tablespoons of olive oil, 2 tablespoons of orange juice, 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of mustard and 1 teaspoon of date syrup. For seasoning, I use a pinch of rock salt, cayenne pepper, cardamom and cumin.

5. For the palm fruity note in curries and stews

I love the sweet note in curries. Dates are an important ingredient in my sweet potato coconut curry because they round off the spiciness well and give the curry a wonderfully pleasant taste. If you use pieces of dates in the curry, you have to be lucky to have one on your spoon. Date syrup is therefore the best way to give the curry a slightly fruity, caramelly taste. An experience with every spoonful. For a pot of curry intended for 2 people, I use a whole tablespoon of date syrup. But just experiment yourself to find the optimal amount.

6. For decorating food

Often, food looks a bit boring on the plate. With the thick date syrup, any dish can be transformed into a masterpiece. Just a teaspoon of syrup is enough to leave sweet, caramel streaks on the plate. The date syrup goes particularly well with bananas. In combination with a little cinnamon and a few grated nuts, a banana can be turned into a wonderful dessert.
